Swepsonville River Park to Saxapahaw Lake (Self-Guided)
Paddle down a 5.5 mile peaceful, nature-filled journey down the Haw River. We shuttle our guests and boats north of the shop, through the rural countryside, and arrive in Swepsonville, NC for your launch. The river is quiet and there is lots of wildlife on the undeveloped, woody shoreline. You’ll often see blue herons, egrets, and turtles – on some occasions you might even spot a bald eagle or two.
Great for guests wanting a longer day trip down the Haw with no rapids. Suitable for guests of all skill levels including beginners. However, please note there is a portage which adds some rugged adventure. You’ll have to exit the river and carry your boats though a 75-yard portage around Swepsonville’s Puryear Dam.
After a few hours, the river widens and you’ve reached “Saxapahaw Lake”. Several unique tree-laced alcoves are here to explore. and likely a host of even more wildlife. While this is a peaceful, scenic journey – you’re still guaranteed a workout! This is a flatwater section of the Haw, with little to no current. Upon exiting your boat you’ll have a nice shorter nature hike back to our shop.
